Info Pages

Align To Baseline

InDesign
The baseline grid represents the leading for body text in a document. You can use multiples of this leading value for all elements of the page to ensure that text always lines up between columns and from page to page.

Apple Mouse Buttons

Mac OS
If you're using an Apple Magic Mouse, it's not initially obvious that there's a right-click button, but it is there. On this page, you'll find instructions to activate it.

Artboards

Illustrator
Artboards are more than simple pages in Illustrator. They can be different sizes, re-arranged and even nested. We'll create, edit and manage artboards in Adobe Illustrator.

Automator

Mac OS
Performing repetitive tasks on your computer can cause errors and be really tedious. Automator is an often ignored app which can perform the same work faster and without errors.

Consistent Blacks

InDesign Illustrator Photoshop
The black you get by default in Photoshop is different than the one in Illustrator and in InDesign. We'll take control of this unruly colour for once and for all.

Cropping

Photoshop
The Crop tool has been in Photoshop since about 1988. Since then, it has learned to do much more than crop an image. We'll explore these features today.

Drawing Tools

Illustrator
In the past few years, Adobe have created new drawing tools for Illustrator. These enhance basic vector drawing capabilities beyond the tools that have been in Illustrator since its inception in the 1980's.

Drop Caps

InDesign Illustrator
Drop caps originate from decorative capitals hand-drawn or painted onto the page. We'll take a much less messy route by letting InDesign set a custom attention-grabbing drop cap.

Eye Dropper Tool

InDesign
The Colour Theme tool is a hidden gem in InDesign. It can sample colour and even apply colour. It can magically pull a whole colour theme from a photo for you to use in your designs. Let's try it out!

Footnotes

InDesign
When designing long documents, you'll often need to set up footnotes. They have a superscript number in the text which refers to a number at the bottom of the page. InDesign takes care of most of the setup for you.

Story Editor

InDesign
The Story Editor is a text-only view of your InDesign page layout in a separate window. It allows you to edit text without layout and formatting distractions.

Trapping

InDesign Illustrator Acrobat
While designers shouldn't need to do trapping on their files, they should be familiar with the concept and the mechanics of how it works.

Using Fonts

Mac OS Creative Cloud InDesign Illustrator Photoshop
Because you'll be juggling many simultaneous assignments, you'll need to activate and deactivate fonts. Most of the time, you'll use fonts from Adobe Fonts. The odd time, you'll need to install fonts on your computer.

Vector Drawing

InDesign
InDesign is surprisingly adept at illustration. There's often no need to jump into Illustrator to create vector art. It can be done right in your page layout in InDesign.
